A gas furnace generates heat by burning fuel. A heat pump moves heat — it extracts heat energy from outdoor air and transfers it inside in winter, then reverses the process to cool your home in summer. That difference in how they work drives most of the differences in cost, efficiency, and performance.

The most important development in recent years is that modern cold-climate heat pumps now perform reliably at temperatures well below freezing — which makes them a genuinely practical option for Michigan winters in a way older heat pumps were not.

Do heat pumps actually work in Michigan winters?

This is the question Michigan homeowners ask most. The honest answer is: modern cold-climate heat pumps do work in Michigan winters — but it depends on which system you install.

Older heat pumps (pre-2015 or so) lost significant efficiency as temperatures dropped below 30°F and often needed supplemental electric resistance heat backup to maintain comfort. That is where the reputation for poor cold-weather performance came from.

Today's cold-climate heat pumps with HSPF2 ratings are a different technology. Systems from manufacturers like Mitsubishi (Hyper Heat), Bosch, Carrier, and others are rated for reliable heating performance down to -13°F or lower. Livonia's average January low temperature is around 19°F — well within efficient operating range for these systems.

The key is specifying the right system. Not all heat pumps are cold-climate rated. We only recommend cold-climate certified systems for Michigan installations.

What about dual-fuel systems?

A dual-fuel system is a practical middle ground — a heat pump paired with a gas furnace backup. The heat pump handles heating and cooling during mild weather when it is most efficient. When outdoor temperatures drop below a preset switchover point (typically around 25-30°F), the system automatically shifts to the gas furnace for backup heat.

This configuration lets you capture most of the heat pump's efficiency advantages during the majority of the heating season while retaining gas backup for extreme cold. It is a good option for homeowners who want heat pump efficiency without fully committing to electricity-only heating.

The operating cost question — Michigan context

Heat pump efficiency looks impressive on paper (200-300% efficient vs 96% for a top gas furnace). But operating cost depends on the ratio of electricity to gas prices in your area — and that ratio matters a lot in Michigan.

Michigan gas rates have historically been relatively favorable compared to electricity costs, which has made high-efficiency gas furnaces competitive on operating cost even against heat pumps.
